The International Health Coordination Centre (IHCC) together with the Welsh Centre for International Affairs (WCIA) publishes its evaluation report on the pilot Global Citizenship training programme for Welsh National Health Service (NHS) health professionals.
When the IHCC started working on promoting Global Citizenship among Welsh health professionals, there was no obvious training resource for health professionals around this topic. Due to the skills and knowledge development Global Citizenship education could bring, a training resource of this nature was thought to be a unique opportunity for the NHS to build its capacity in international engagement and strengthen its role as a global actor. It was felt that this type of training resource could help raise awareness of the value of international engagement and act as a platform for those interested in international health partnerships. The training forms part of NHS Wales’ commitment to promoting global health through the Charter for International Health Partnerships and the Well-being of Future Generations Wales Act 2015 – a unique piece of Welsh legislation embedding the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The IHCC captured NHS Wales’s staff perception of Global Citizenship in a scoping report it published in 2015. This report identified a clear interest amongst staff in Global Citizenship training. Following this scoping work, the IHCC worked in collaboration with the WCIA to develop and pilot two Global Citizenship training courses for Welsh health professionals. The courses were delivered in partnership with Cwm Taf University Health Board as part of their international engagement under the Charter implementation and their recognition of international engagement as Continued Professional Development (CPD)
The evaluation report published today outlines the results of these pilot courses as well as recommendations for future training.
“How a local impact may have a global effect, enabled me to be less small minded”
is how one of the course participants described the impact of the pilot in their end-of-session feedback.
